Lost At Sea

Hey everyone!

I am really excited to show you this video for two reasons!
First: This one comes with the production logo I attempted to design.
It's still a work in progress, but I knew I had to start somewhere.  I plan on gradually improving it as I improve in editing and design.   I am getting a motion graphics program sometime in the near future, and once I get the hang of it, I plan to go crazy with it.  I think gradually improving it will be a good way to track my progression.  For anyone who might be making their own videos, I recommend designing one.  You can express your passion for your work as uniquely and creatively as you want to, as well as represent yourself and your videos.  I chose a line from Alice in Wonderland as my logo because I am a huge fan of the story.  What it means to me is having the strength to find your way no matter how lost you feel and how crazy the world around you can seem.  That is definitely something I can relate to, haha.

The second reason I am excited for this video is that I got to show a side of me that I don't express very often.  I have a free spirit that is dying to be portrayed in my films.  This is only the beginning of my free spirit themed videos I want to do.  I wanted so badly to go all out with this one, but I decided to keep it simple, and save some ideas for the next ones.

This vid is totally up for interpretation, which is what I love about editing abstractly.  While I like that it leaves room for people to make up their own story,  I think it might help if I start giving an overview of my own interpretation so that you know what it means personally to me.

What I see in the character portrayed is that her spirit, while free, is entwined with the spirit of the water.  Clearly unsure of herself and where she is going, she watches the sunset on the lake as her way of praying, and gazes through the bouquet of flowers to see the world in her own light.  When the bright colors begin to emerge, she finds that her answer is to put trust in her own vision for her future, because she knows her dreams and passion are beautiful.   Totally channeling Eleanor Roosevelt right now! Hahaha.

If you want, you can definitely let me know what you interpreted!  I think it's always really fun to share different perspectives because everyone is going through different things in their lives, and sometimes you can relate in a totally different way.

I really hope you guys enjoy it. :)

  1. I love the way that you used color and the movie was very interesting. It made Tom think of a cartoon. I did not like the song. Sorry if it is a friend or something. Sounded like Glenda the Good Witch.

  2. This song has been haunting me, one of my favorites for a while. I think the colors and compositions are all very smart and fitting (beautiful). Very nice job, keep it up. Was this a video-equivalent self portrait?

  3. Hey! Great to hear from you! Thank you so much for watching and critiquing. I miss seeing your photography at the craft fair! To answer your question: while I wish I could say it is a totally legitimate self-portrait, I don't typically wear crafty hippie crowns and pray to the sunset on the lake. But I absolutely loved pretending. It was an idea that came from the heart.

  4. You seem particularly adept at setting moods, using all the tools tastefully and without being heavy handed. This is artfully done. It makes me wonder if the music inspires the scenes and moods or do you film your ideas and find the music to match. Both are legitimate, just wondering where the inspiration comes from.

  5. Gary: It means so much to me that you are taking the actual content into consideration when you are making your critiques. Thank you for that!

That is a great question. When I first started the video blog, I was mainly just trying to get back into the swing of things. I realized that a lot of editing I have done was essentially someone else's idea and I was working with that then trying to add my own flair to things in post. Now that I was coming up with own ideas, I barely knew where to start with planning and preproduction and whatnot. So I was basically grabbing my camera, going out and winging it with shots I liked and hoping it would all come together. Then when I got home from shooting, as everything imported, I got a feel for what the footage looked like, and what style I could go with. I picked out my music right before editing and then I came up with a story in my head as I edited. Now, slowly but surely, I am becoming increasingly inspired by certain music and feel inclined to add my own story that I could actually plan before the shoot. That is what I did with the past 3 videos. I really like both methods, since not really knowing what music I'm going to use gives me a lot of freedom before and after a shoot, and knowing the music beforehand gives me a good idea of the kind of shots I should be getting and what mood I should be portraying in them.

There were two goals when I went out to shoot for the last video: Think: CocoRosie's RIP Burn Face, and try to capture being an inner free spirit who is a little scared to let go. Then, as always, I get to have all the real fun in post. haha. I hope that answers your question!

Again, thank you for watching and your take on the work. Hope to keep hearing from you.

  8. <--- thinks maybe you should ;-)

Art shows are done for a spell. Working on revamping my portfolio and gearing more towards exhibitions, one-man-shows and traveling. That, along with learning film-making is all I want right now! Hear's hopin...

  9. Justine: Thanks! I crafted that myself and there is no way I will ever throw it away. I will bust it out whenever i want to feel my free-est. Thank you so much for watching!

Float: I love those words. Thank you very much for the inspiration. I will think of them whenever I question myself.

Stephen: I think I should, too! I'm not going to lie, though. I was totally giggling that entire time.

Sounds like a fun life! You sound like a magician haha. Well let me know if you ever want to talk about film-making. While an amateur, I do have lots of thoughts and insights on the subject. My skype/twitter is Flaurenciaaa if you have either.

  10. Just found you via Stacey's vid you did.I love this!! I have to comment :-)! You have a unique quality and distinct feel to your videos. My interpretation is: There is a renewal and peace that comes in solitude. There is hope when letting go(the blowing of the seeds, the wind sweeping thru and carrying them on, the birds flying overhead)Still with a contemplative personal nature (featuring her face back and forth within the frames) The different sounds and languages in the music display a feel that there may be different cultures and nations of people but we all FEEL the same things and go through the same stages of pain, and healing. The sunset speaks to me that there is the peace in the letting go as the sun goes down there is always a new day. HOPE! Your so gifted and what a treasure to come across you!

AWESOME job on Stacey's promo!! Now following you closely:-)
